Montenegro Coast

Montenegro (“Black Mountain”) is a small Adriatic country roughly the size of Connecticut, where limestone peaks of the Dinaric Alps drop almost straight into the sea. It packs the fjord-like Bay of Kotor, medieval walled towns, Europe’s deepest canyon (Tara River), and five national parks into a compact stretch of coast and high mountains. Independent since 2006 and using the euro without being in the EU, it remains one of the Balkans’ less-crowded places where dramatic scenery and quiet roads still dominate. It sits just north of Albania. It has a far more modern feel than the other Balkan Countries we’ve traveled so far, hopefully we will find the people equally engaging!

A late crossing of the border put us immediately looking for a place for the night. Our app showed us a small family farm with a couple of spots. Perfect! The proud owner immediately gave us the tour of his bee / honey operation then his homemade Brandy operation made from grapes that they call Raki. Oh boy, go easy we’ve seen this hospitality twice before!!
Grapes overhead are collected and held for 21 days.
Then into the still. It varies in alcohol content from 22% to 60%. It actually has a very fruity taste and the lower alcohol content version is quite good.
In the morning we headed to the coast. The water here like all the Adriatic is amazing. Also the beaches tend to be round rock vs sand (our preference).
Stopping for brunch with amazing views.
Cappuccino!
Sveti Stefan. A super awesome island along the coast.
Budva. A captivating view and city. Far more modern than other countries coastline.
Budva approaching sunset. There was a bad accident on the hairpin road leading farther up, so we are stealth camping here for the night. This presents a chance to visit for the evening during a city festival.
Inside Budva Oldtown. History continues. More Montenegro to follow…

Beautiful! We have only visited Kotor for a day on a cruise but it was spectacular. The cruise through the fjord with the cliffs rising on both sides was awe inspiring. Enjoy the rest of Montenegro. We can’t wait to hear where this ranks among your stops.

We’ve been saving Kotor for when Kadi and Lily visit. They will come for 12 days for Thanksgiving. We have an ABNB for then. Excited to see family!!
