Durmitor National Park in northern Montenegro is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of soaring limestone peaks, ancient forests, and glacial lakes known locally as “mountain eyes.” Centered around the rugged Durmitor massif and the dramatic Tara River Canyon—Europe’s deepest gorge—the park rises to Bobotov Kuk at 2,523 meters and offers a wild, high-alpine landscape of meadows, pine woods, and turquoise lakes that feels far removed from the Adriatic coast. The trip up and over Sedlo pass was perhaps our most epic yet. As a comparison the Royal Gorge in CO is about 1,250 feet, Black Canyon is 2,722 feet. This was 4,370 feet with multiple tunnels where they just said “hell with the insert we’re blasting straight through!
We first drove up to Black Lake to camp and caught up on laundry etc. The hike around the lake was great. The next morning we headed farther up and over the Sedlo Pass. This is the highest mountain pass in Montenegro (6,500 feet). It was rainy in the morning and dreary. Then after a slow foggy 20km, we reached the top. There was “Sedlo” (our name for the black watch dog) waiting for us in the mist. Almost eery. No houses or people all the way up (or down). Just Sedlo. We fed him some sausage and headed down. Then three miles later I saw him in the rear view mirror still running after us. Gulp. Our hearts broke and the rest of our breakfast sausage went out the door to him!The view from above was crazy. The water amazing with the walls going down into water.Looking at the GPS you could see endless switchbacks. Acts and the bridge coming. That’s the bridge.Tunnels just blasted thru. And not just any tunnels, but u-turn tunnels! And long tunnels with no lights!!Finally down to the bridge & reservoir.Stayed the night next to this church.Newer vintage but must be the pride of the small town.Crossing the dam it is a long way down. This was amazing but not sure pics do it justice.Looking back up that bridge was a bit scary…And finally down to the border crossing. Guess this guy heard Teena was coming! Ok next up, Bosnia…
